Dear students: I hope your school year is going well, and you are studying hard. And, I hope you are enjoying reading about my trip, and learning from that also. I am now in a new state, New Mexico, so maybe you can read some about that. I have several questions for you, and then will tell you more about the trip.
1) every morning when I start walking, I can tell if I'm going in the right direction by looking at the sun. Where do you think the sun should be every morning for my walk......and why? On my left, on my right, in front of me, or behind me?
2) I had 1 less hour to walk on the day I came into New Mexico from Arizona.....do you know why?
3) When I started planning the walk, I could not name all the states along the southern border of the USA......but now I can. Can you name all the states (in order) along the southern border? One of them I won't be walking in.
4) I'm always finding stuff along the road, and just recently found a 1944 "wheat" penny. Do you know what a wheat penny is? Maybe your teacher or parents can show you if you don't know.
That's enough questions for now.......you have other work to do I'm sure. Do you know what I find along the road more than anything else?" Bungee cords........can you imagine? Not the pretty ones you might have on your bike, but the flat black ones. When we first started our walk, we would pick them up and save them, but now I don't bother.....already have enough. I also find lots of coins......pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters, etc. And, I find lots of tools.....wrenches, sockets, screw drivers, and other things. Not sure how these things get out here.
Some of you have asked if I get lonely out here.......not much. I have my cell phone with me, so talk to family and friends most every day. Plus I meet people along the road and talk to them. And I think a lot about the things I see, or about my family, or about the questions you ask. In the evening I am usually so tired that I just am glad to take off my shoes and get in the tent.
What do you think about the tarantulas? They seem pretty harmless, but are scary to look at. I don't think they would bother any one. I will be talking to you again soon.....
Those flat, black bungees are what truckers use to "tie down" the tarps that cover their loads.
ReplyDeleteDear Mr. Rudisill,
ReplyDeleteThe students have enjoyed reading your updates. Mrs. Rhoades showed us pictures of her visit with you and we were glad to see our letters to you loaded on your cart!! The students said they would understand if you had to throw them away at some point because it may make your load too heavy, but they were so excited to see them on the cart!!!!
In answer to your questions, we think that you are walking toward the sun since the sun rises in the east, the direction that you are walking. We hope your hat keeps the sun out of your eyes!! We were able to name all of the states that you will be going through and noticed that you wouldn't be going through Florida, we think. We also found out that you entered a new time zone.
We hope all is well with you! The students truly are inspired by you and love seeing your posts. Many of us wear the walking man shirts and tell everyone about your adventure!! Keep safe!!
