Day 9, 9-7-10: Morongo Valley to Joshua Tree, CA

After a good sleep, we packed up and headed to Joshua Tree. The fireman told us the first 6 miles were uphill, but gentle, and that proved to be about right. We were rested, so not a bad walk.....and the temperature continued to stay in the 90's. About half way on today's walk is Yucca Valley.

Yucca Valley is a really nice town. Much of it is restored to how it once looked years ago, plus just lots of good stores and restaurants. We finally stopped at a small diner named "John's Place." If you're ever out here, try it out. Good food, service, prices, atmosphere.....what else is there? For some reason I always seem to want breakfast foods, so had eggs, hash browns, country fried steak, and drink. But they have almost anything you want. After stuffing ourselves, we rested and digested for an hour or so and moved out to Joshua Tree.

The walk to Joshua Tree was pretty uneventful. We're now in the high desert, and walking and pushing the cart is easy. The landscape is now almost all desert, but still with some population. Our cart has an "alignment" problem due to minor damage during shipping (my fault, not UPS), so has a slight pull to the right. We need to get that fixed somewhere along the way. Overall, the cart is a blessing and we can load everything on it on a reasonably flat surface. As we entered Joshua Tree, noticed a small laundermat, and decided to wash some clothes after refreshing and resting for a while.

With no campgrounds nearby, we decided to pitch our tents in a field across the street from the laundermat. We settled down for a good nite, and our last day of walking until a day of rest. Then, it hit me........somewhere along the way I had picked up a "bug" and my stomach started churning. Without going into details, I was in and out of that tent all nite. Sometimes I couldn't find my light and just went out in the dark, a good target for most anything out there. But you know, I really didn't care at that time. It was a long nite.
