Day 38: Duncan, AZ, to Lordsburg, NM.....2nd day

Slept late this morning, didn't get up until around 630am or so. Must be the time change, but didn't matter because the sun didn't come up until around 7. Today will be a short day......I figure about 13 miles to Lordsburg. Looking forward to getting there and checking into a motel for some R&R.

The road was much like the day before......long, straight, windy, and not a lot of traffic. But it was cool and sunny, so conditions are good. I noticed a couple of large ranches, and cattle grazing. Not much to graze on out here, but with the seasonal grasses, guess it will feed some cattle. Cows and horses seem to be curious......if they notice me walking, will watch until I get out of sight. I also saw one of the "old timey" windmills that was working. I've seen lots of these, none working until this one.

After 9 miles I stopped to rest.....usually go 10 on the first walk of the day, but having some problems with my right foot, so wanted to rest that. Also, it's time for a new pair of shoes. These have about 600 miles, and pretty much worn out walking on the pavement. After resting, walked another mile and saw Lordsburg ahead. I also saw my 5th tarantula. It was a big one, walking along on the shoulder of the road. My cell phone battery has been dead since last evening, so no picture.

As I entered Lordsburg, saw a sign for a road named "Lee Trevino Drive." I asked several people about the name, but no one seemed to know why it was named after the famous golfer. I also passed a large border patrol station. Lordsburg sits right on interstate I-10, so has lots of eating places, motels, etc. I found a Best Western with wi-fi, laundry, free breakfast, good rates, so checked in. It was around noon, and the room wouldn't be ready until 2, so walked next door to the Kranberry Restaurant for lunch. After a salad, big bowl of beef stew, and many glasses of lemonade, felt much better.

After lunch I was able to get into the room. Bathed, rested, worked on computer, and walked to a local grocery store for a few supplies. Nothing much the remainder of the day.....just laid around, watched TV, and rested. Sleeping in a bed was nice, but I woke up several times during the night for whatever reason.......guess it was too comfortable.

Tomorrow is a day of rest, and preparation for returning to the walk on Friday.

  1. Hello Mr. Rudisill,

Congratulations on getting to New Mexico!

You and I have never met. I first heard of your 'walking plans' when you were interviewed on WBT radio in August. I had been running errands, drove into my driveway as your interview started and just sat in the car and listened to the entire interview. WOW! The thought of someone wanting to walk across the country and actually doing it totally baffled me.

Thanks for sharing your adventure; every few days I check your blog. My husband and I are enjoying your posts about the towns and the people that you are meeting along the way. People are generally kind, gracious, and good....... I'm glad that seems to be what you are finding!

From Mooresville, NC (north of Charlotte) we hope you continue to have a safe, healthy walk! Take Care.
