Day 39 - Resting in Lordsburg

Today is a rest day, and getting ready to start to Deming tomorrow. I will walk I-10 the 60 miles to Deming......NM allows walking on the interstate. Not especially crazy about walking there, but it appears to be the only practical (and shortest) way. Hopefully there will be rest areas and maybe some stores along the way. I expect this to take 3 days.......or less than an hour by car!

It's time for a new pair of shoes, so will break out the pair I bought in Mesa. I started the walk wearing a pair of Saucony which I wear in my everyday walking, but they seemed to be a little wide and causing blisters. So changed to New Balance 1226, and have had better results. They just seem to fit better. The pavement is hard on the soles, and after 500 miles or so, the cushioning begins to lose its value, and the legs start suffering. I will keep the old ones in case of rain or some other reason I might need them.

I also did some laundry today. Socks are especially important to keep clean. Sand and grime gets built up in them, and can result in blisters. Since my feet have improved over the past couple of weeks, I have been a little careless in their care, so need to get back to paying more attention to them. Right now I have a sore spot on the right foot that needs to be fixed. I also noticed my feet will swell some when I take a rest day, not sure what's up with that. I've sorted through my stuff and tried to get a little organized, and looking for opportunities to lighten the load. Think I might get rid of 1 cooler......since the weather has changed don't seem to have the need for so many liquids.

Actually, when I take a rest day it feels a little lazy for some reason.....on the other hand it does wonders as far as resting the body and healing the feet. But, back to walking tomorrow, and I hope you will keep in touch and keep following the blog. You being there helps. If you're ever out this way traveling, I would highly recommend Highway 70 for a drive. It is really beautiful from Globe, AZ, to Lordsburg, NM, with some nice little towns between.

Take care, Jeff.

FYI: I am scheduled to do another radio this coming Monday morning (Oct 11), around 10am. It'll be on the Keith Larson show, WBT 1110 AM (they also have an FM station, but not sure of the number), in Charlotte, NC. If you don't live close enough to pick up the station, maybe you can get it over your computer. Or, Julie will try to capture it and post on the blog later.

  3. The feet swelling could be due to salt and caffeine intake.

  6. Hi Jeff, Sorry I got a little behind on my reading. I am catching up today and will be with you on a daily basis for the rest of your trip. I hope your new shoes are working out well for you. There are a lot of good brands out there and they are all made so differently. I am a Mizuno girl myself! Be careful walking on those interstates and be kind to those feet of yours. Might try to elevate them during your breaks and at night to get the swelling to go down. I have found that to work well during hiking trips, so why not during your cross-country walk! :-)
    Take Care,
    Holly
