Last evening was one of the best of the trip......unless in a motel. Very cool evening, a nice, quiet campsite, and slept all night. But, my wake up call comes at 5am, so I'm up and ready to start walking around 6. I dreaded today, because I understood one of the highway guys to say I had an eight mile uphill climb into Globe. But, nothing to do except do it.
I started out, passed through a little community named "Top of The World" at an altitude of about 4,700', and then the road started down. And it kept going down until I reached Miami, AZ....the self proclaimed "Copper Center of The World." Lots of copper mining out the way, in fact probably the largest industry. Then, I walked a little farther, and saw a sign, Globe City Limits. I was here by 1pm, and no uphill walk. Sometimes things just work out.
I was ready for lunch, and craving a Wendy's Taco salad. Wendy's was about 4 miles more, but I could just taste that salad, so set out. When I finally reached it, guess what? They didn't sell that salad any longer! Is this something local, or have they all quit selling it? Anyhow, opted for something else, plus a cup of chili, and a medium drink with refills.
Talked to some guys who were doing a motorcycle trip around the western states, and they were interested in my walk. One of them handed me a $5 and said he wanted to pay for my lunch......how 'bout that? We talked more, and then I set out to find a camping site. Stopped by the Chamber of Commerce, and they told me the Gila County RV Park allowed tents, so I stopped there and rented a spot. Settled down for another nice, cool evening.
Howdy Jeff, Little stormy here in 29 this morning. Like you said about desert people we got up early to watch it and smell the rain coming. Globe is about 500 miles into the trip you are moving right along. Be safe and enjoy yourself.

Wendy's here in Roanoke has a new taco salad. It has changed, but they still have one. Praying for you as you continue on your jouney.
ReplyDeleteJeff,
ReplyDeleteI looked up Wendy's in AZ and see they now call the Taco Salad the BAJA SALAD. They say about the salad online: Enjoy our rich and meaty chili with fresh pico de gallo, guacamole, tortilla strips and creamy Red JalapeƱo dressing.
They have put a different twist on the Taco Salad. Hope you can find it at the next Wendy's. Keep up your spirits, you are doing so fantastic on the walk. We are all rooting and supporting you.
Hi Jeff. Just wanted to let you know I have been following your walk and enjoying your updates. Sorry to hear you lost your walking buddy, but I have no doubts that you will finish your walk as you plan. Take care. You have a lot of people praying for a safe and wonderful adventure for you.
ReplyDeleteHi Dad.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about Alan leaving, but I'm sure you will persevere. We are following every post on the blog...Russ is hoping the cart is serving you well. Carly is still offering to come walk with you, and the boys have encouraged her to go! Enjoy every step and remember, "Just a little climb at the beginning, levels out, then a long downhill to the finish". Love, Susan
Hi Susan and family: I would love to have Carly with me, she would "talk" me across America. All is well so far, and I am able to avg about 20 or so miles per day without problem. The cart is doing fine, but I have a few ideas for the next version! I am sitting in the breakfast area of a Springhill motel this morning (10/3, 856am).....they were kind enuf to let me use their wireless connection. Oh yea, that's with my new laptop! Take care, love dad.
ReplyDeleteDear Jeff,
ReplyDeleteWe did some research about the cacti and sometimes cacti have to be straightened. They also can get a bacteria at the foot of the of the cacti but it can be cure with care. Maybe that is why some of them have platforms and some maybe have been transplanted because of disease. We are happy that some of our comments may have perked you up. You are a very brave person for having perseverance and the independence to carry on your journey.
