Questions for Students
Dear Students,
I am experiencing some things that I don't understand, so maybe you can tell me what's going on.
1) At the end of my day walking, my green shirt is almost completely white with white streaks all over it . Do you know what might be causing this and are there any precautions I need to take?
2)I know I need to wear my hat to keep the sun off my face, but it is hotter for me with my hat on than when it is off. Do you know why?
3) My lips are parched, my mouth is dry and my legs are cramping. Can you tell me why and what I can do to prevent this.
Thank you for your help!

I will pray for you to have a safe trip. Make sure you hava a lots of drinks.
ReplyDelete1. The white streaks on your shirt are from the dried salt found in your persperation. Be sure to drink plenty of water and possibly take salt tablets to replace the loss. Skip drinking Cheer Wine.
ReplyDelete2. The top of you head is where you lose much body heat. For dogs it is through their tounge. Switch to a straw hat or carry a parasole.
3. Again drink more water. The first thing to check is your water consumption. Dehydration is one common cause of leg cramps. Low Potassium and calcium intake are another factor.
What can be done about it?
? When your calf muscles cramp, flex your foot up (toes to ceiling)
and hold until the cramping stops
? Apply heat to cramping muscles
? Massage the cramped muscles
? Make sure you eat plenty of potassium rich foods - (bananas,
tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli, cantaloupe, oranges, grapefruit)
A diet of beef jerkey doesn't cut it.
Cinderella told me, " that gatorade or a sports drink will keep the cramps at bay", no cheerwine or sundrop for sure! do they even ship that to CA? Make sure to keep some with you during the night, it will take the cramps away so you can sleep, unless Wayne is willing to fly out there to massage your legs for you!
ReplyDeleteHi Hows Alan doing? I hope he is drinking plenty of water now instead of Coca Cola! (from Alan's Aunty)
ReplyDeleteHi Jeff,
ReplyDeleteWe think we might be able to help you with your questions.
1) We think your green shirt is fading because of the sun. We also think that the white streaks are from you sweating due to the hot sun.
2)The reason your head is so hot with your hat on is becuase your hat is trapping the heat inside of it. If your hat is black it will attract the sun a lot faster than a lighter color. Maybe you want to wear a sunvisor instead? Andrew said for you to use an umbrella if you had one. Josh also mentioned if you have an umbrella than you are safe when it rains. Daniel thinks you should poke holes in your hat so that the heat can escape.
3) We think you might want to consider taking small breaks or stretching to help prevent your legs from cramping. Have you ever heard that eating a banana can help you with muscles aches? We also think you might want to get some chap stick to help your lips. Drink plenty of water for your dry mouth.
We hope our suggestions help you during your journey. Mrs. Glover's 5th Grade Class
1. The white streaks on your shirt could be caused from sweat or faded by the sun. You can wear white shirts or spray yourself with a spray water bottle to help with you keep cool. Drink lots of water and maybe walk under shade when it is available.
ReplyDelete2. You are hot because more heat rolls off your head. You should get a hat that has a lot of tiny holes to let the air go through and the heat to come out.
3. The cramping could be cause by low potassium. Take bananas with you. They have potassium. You could also stretch repeatedly during your walk.
We hope these things work for you.

Here is a hunters tip for your lips- rub the bridge of your nose and you have some oil from your skin. Then wipe the oil on your lips. Let us know if it works for you too!! For your cramps you might want to eat some bananas and apples. Not beef jerky and coke. You might also want to rub on your cramp legs. You need to wear a sun visor or cut the top out of your hat.
ReplyDeleteHere are a few questions:
1. Are you having fun?
2. What are some new things you are seeing and doing?
3. Are your legs getting stronger from all of the walking?
Keep Walking and look forward to hear from you soon!

Jeff,
ReplyDeleteI just read the comments from my fifth grade students at Woodhill and Tryon Elementary Schools. Aren't they amazing? (I have to agree that bananas are probably in order!)
Many thanks for including our students in your journey by posing thoughtful questions for them to ponder. Our kids (and other readers as well I noticed)love these!

We love the pictures. We saw the lake. In the distance, we saw the mountains. We even noticed the sand and the plants around where you were standing. It was fun seeing the different land forms. We can't wait for the next pictures! Have a good holiday this weekend.
